Chapter Six — The Secret of Sex

“Sex energy is the creative energy of all geniuses. There never has been, and never will be a great leader, builder or artist lacking in the driving force of sex.” — Napoleon Hill

The Secret of Sex

It wouldn’t be right to talk about creativity without referring to the greatest creative power that we all have — our sexual energy. The previous chapters outline the processes for unsticking one’s creative self, and for setting your creative energy in motion. Now, the secret of sex is revealed — in order to create something, one can utilize the same force that is used for creating new life: sexual energy.

Actually, this is not a secret for some. Sex and creative energy have been linked for a long time; one system — the chakra system, referred to in the ancient literature of the Vedas, which originated in India more than four thousand years ago, traces the energetic centers of the human body: it identifies one of those centers as the sexual and creative chakra. Chakra is a Sanskrit term that means “wheel” or “circle” and it refers to the way that energy was seen to swirl in these areas on the human body. The second chakra is the Swadhisthana or the sacral chakra; it is located in the groin and is related to base emotion, sexuality and creativity.

The reason why many spiritual traditions and disciplines eschew sexual activity is so that the practitioners would have more energy to apply to other activities, such as contemplation, gaining personal power, esoteric or academic studies, athletic training, etc. It is not a prudish view, but a practical energetic statement to say that one can choose one of two paths: one can either use one’s sexual energy to make babies or one can use it to create something else.1

It is said that all energy is sexual. It is a fact that all action requires energy — the action that requires the greatest amount of energy is creativity. The reason that creative activity requires a great amount of energy has to do with the principle of inertia — if an object is already moving, the force required to move it is less; conversely, if an object is at rest, moving it requires greater force. Creating something new is analogous to trying to move an object from a standstill or even reversing its direction.

Transmuting sexual energy from sex to creative activity

The sexual drive is arguably one of the most powerful forces in nature. It has the power to bring together two disparate elements and through a veritable alchemy, produce a third element; this power is so amazing that it defies the laws of mathematics:

1+1=3

How magical is that? All of nature shows us that the sexual creative force is one of the most powerful forces in this universe, and it is ours to command! How we utilize our power is up to us. Many people are drawn to having children; creating a new individual and nurturing them into adulthood is an endeavor of immense proportions that requires a lot of sustained energy over a great numbers of years.

Creating a new project, new business, or art requires energy as well. Depending on the extent and duration of the creative project, it could consume a small or great amount of energy — sometimes as much as creating a child. How can one marshall and utilize that energy?
